MAMMOTH® Biocontrol FAQs
Have a question? We’ve got answers. Below are answers to the most frequently asked questions by the mammoth community.
Why use a preventative insecticide?
MB-PI has been specifically formulated to prevent insect and mite infestations of plants. Typically by the time a cultivator detects an infestation of insects or mites, significant damage has already been done to their plants. The advantage of using MB-PI is that the cultivator significantly lowers the risk of an infestation at a fraction of the cost of what the plant is worth.
What is the underlying technology of MAMMOTH® Biocontrol-Preventative Insecticide (MBPI), and how does it work?
MB-PI prevents insect and mite infestations by utilizing a dual mode of action (MOA). The first MOA is as a suffocant which uses oil to coat the insect and/or mite, causing blockage of the spiracles (air holes) resulting in death due to asphyxiation. The second MOA is the way in which MB-PI utilizes the natural compounds in thyme that act as a natural deterrent for insect and mite colonization and subsequent propagation.
What's the advantage/difference between MB-PI and other similar products?
MB-PI has been tested on cannabis plants specifically, and is a proprietary formulation made with natural compounds found in thyme oil to prevent mite and insect infestation. When applied according to the directions on the label, MB-PI is highly effective in preventing an infestation, which enables your plant to reach its full yield potential.
If you’re wondering how MB-PI compares to neem-based products: while neem-based products have been shown over time to be efficacious, the active ingredient in Neem, azadirachtin, might be associated with health problems.
After several years of research, we identified the components of thyme oil that are responsible for preventing spider mite infestation, and that are equally efficacious to neem-based products in preventing infestation.
While products that contain generic thyme oil can accomplish some level of pest prevention, it is nowhere near the level that our product does due to the specific components of thyme that we identified and included in our MB-PI formulation.
What is a biocontrol? Why is it better than using synthetic chemicals to control pests?
Due to the limitations of use of insecticides according to state and federal regulations, the use of naturally-derived active ingredients that are not subject to EPA regulations provide a grower with a natural and proven alternative to the use of synthetic chemicals. The ingredients used in MB-PI have been determined to pose little to no risk to human health or the environment, while proven to be effective in insect and mite control.

How and when should I apply MAMMOTH® Biocontrol-Preventative Insecticide (MB-PI) to my plants?
MB-PI should be applied weekly, when plants will not be exposed to sunlight or other direct lighting for 8 hours. Plants should be well hydrated before application. MB-PI should only be used in accordance to the directions provided on the product label or on our website at www.mammothmicrobes.com/biocontrol. Any deviation from the directions provided on the product label could result in decreased product efficacy, decreased plant vigor, or plant stress.
When should I stop applying?
MB-PI should not be applied after flowers have set. It will not damage the flowers, however we cannot guarantee that there will not be some residual impacts to flavor. Stop applying MB-PI if there are signs of phytotoxicity (leaf burning) after application. Follow MB-PI label instructions regarding when to apply and conduct a precautionary trial to ensure that the product does not negatively impact your plants. Do not use on newly planted cuttings or plants stressed by drought.
Will MB-PI show up in testing?
MB-PI is exempt from registration with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency under FIFRA section 25(b) as a minimum risk pesticide. Plant-derived ingredients leave zero toxic residue and are safe for testing.
How long will it take to notice MB-PI’s effectiveness?
MB-PI is specially formulated to prevent the probability of the establishment of an insect and/or mite infestation. It is recommended for use during the growth phase before the establishment of mites and thrips. MB-PI can be used as part of a comprehensive IPM program in the event that an infestation does occur.
Will MB-PI compete with anything I'm using?
MB-PI has not been shown to interfere with the use of other products. Caution should be used when using other oil based products in concert with MB-PI to ensure there is no phototoxicity. Additionally, MB-PI may be used with predator insects as a part of a broader IPM strategy. As with any botanical oil that may be used in conjunction with predatory mites or other predatory insects, the cultivator should ensure that these various prevention strategies are applied on a sequential basis. Implementing these strategies correctly is important to ensure that the oils in MB-PI do not affect predator insects.
Can MB-PI be mixed with other products?
MB-PI should only be mixed with a surfactant during the application of the product. Please refer to the MB-PI product label for proper application and use instructions.
What is the shelf life of MB-PI and how should I store it?
Your bottle of MB-PI will remain stable for 24 months from the date of manufacture found on the back label of the bottle. Once opened, we recommend using your bottle of MB-PI within six months. Product should be stored at room temperature, and should not be exposed to temperatures below freezing or above 90°F (32°C). Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight should also be avoided. Keep the lid on when not in use to prevent evaporation of active ingredients.
What does the number stamped on the back of my bottle indicate?
The numbers stamped on the back of your bottle indicate the lot number and the manufacture date (MFD). Mammoth Microbes uses these numbers to ensure that every bottle is tracked for quality control, and to ensure the product meets product specifications. Each bottle of MB-PI is stable at room temperature for two years on the shelf and six months once opened.
Does water quality matter in the application of MB-PI? Can I use tap water, or do I need to use filtered or reverse osmosis (RO) water?
Tap water may be used in the application of MB-PI. It is not necessary to use filtered or RO water.
Does the pH of my water matter in the application of MB-PI?
Most water that is used to water plants falls in the pH range of 6 to 7.5. No adjustments are necessary when applying MB-PI.
Can I use MB-PI in my aquaponics system?
MB-PI is not approved for use in any aquaponics system.
Are there microbes in MB-PI?
No, there are no microbes in MB-PI.
Are the ingredients in MB-PI safe?
MB-PI is safe when used as directed. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), MB-PI is categorized as a 25(b) minimum risk pesticide. The ingredients used in MB-PI are exempt from being registered under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) and are determined to pose little to no risk to human health or the environment. More information can be found on the EPA website at https://www.epa.gov/minimum-risk-pesticides/minimum-risk-pesticide-definition-and-product-confirmation. For additional product safety information, please refer to the product MSDS sheet on the product page of the MB-PI website.
Should I handle this MB-PI with caution?
Please use MB-PI according to the instructions on the product label. Eye protection is recommended while handling product in order to avoid eye irritation. Appropriate clothing is recommended to avoid skin irritation.
Can you ship internationally?
At this time MB-PI is only available in the United States. Please refer to the “Stores” page on the MB-PI website to find out where MB-PI is approved for sale.
Do I need to add a surfactant along with MB-PI?
MB-PI contains 5% lecithins, which are emulsifiers that significantly reduce the surface tension of oils – this is an essential characteristic as a surfactant. The formulation we used to create MB-PI has the right level of surfactant functionality, but for better and faster efficacy, the use of additional surfactants/wetting agents are recommended.
What type of sprayers can be used to apply MB-PI?
MB-PI is compatible with all types of sprayers, including manual sprayers, spray bottles, atomizers, foggers, backpack sprayers, tank sprayers, etc.
